Dusk Thoughts

Daniel Steduto and Emelie Robertson

This Collaboration

Dusk Thoughts, is a collaboration between Emelie and Daniel’s perception of music, time and space. We were paired together because of our similar interests in music and desire to learn from each other throughout this project. Early on we spoke extensively about elements we could use to describe our state of mind during each development of the project to help convey what we were feeling through sensory experience associated to sound and visuals. Both Daniel and Emelie tend to recount memories visually. Which influenced Daniel to begin the music in open and floaty sounding way, and to Emelie it felt almost like flying.

The later part is less of a colour and more so recounting a memory, as Daniel attempted to recreate the feeling of walking through forests in Rockwood (where he used to live) while composing that part. Without discussing these visual cues with each other, but simply reacting to the music, Emelie felt drawn to the emotional weight of being alone in a dense forest. Thus, Dusk Thoughts was created.

Emelie Robertson

I’m a painter originally from Northwestern Ontario, I studied and practiced in Guelph for a number of years, and have recently moved, slightly farther north, to Fort Smith, NWT. My love for trees, rocks and water inevitably informs my practice; my experiences in the ever-changing compositions in the boreal ecosystem has drawn me to create. I primarily work from memories and meditation, and often rely on music to bring me into the right headspace. I studied at the University of Guelph, earning a BA(H) in Studio Art and
French, during my time there I was able to exhibit work and study in the specialized studio program.
Alongside making art, I am a seasonal firefighter with Parks Canada.

Daniel Steduto

My name is Daniel Steduto and I am a guitarist in the Guelph area. I recently graduated from Humber College with a Bachelor of Music degree, and during my 4 years at school I learned extensively about
composing in the Jazz idiom as well as many other styles. The music I have supplied for my portion of this project with Emelie is rooted mostly in the Jazz idiom but also with elements of Rock, Alternative and Ambient musical styles. Being a part of this Co-Create Residency was a great experience, and I also have 2 different bands if you enjoy what you heard: I.O.U Trio which is essentially my Jazz outlet and Imantrus which is rooted more in Progressive Rock. My trio has an EP out called “3 States” and the Imantrus full length album will be released in the near future!
